DOMINIQUE AUERBACHER
Paysages sur catalogue
1998

Dominique Auerbacher's work concerns the sort of non-places which thrive on the periphery of urban centers, generating a new kind of landscape. Be they shopping malls, industrial zones, or areas of artisanal activity that crop up along the A1 motorway in the North of France, the environmental development they imply seems to ignore any semblance of urban planning. A shopping center rises up next to a field, a recreation area is juxtaposed to a parking lot : it is this mixing of genres and the resulting impression of disorder, as well as the standardized artificiality of the structure themselves, which are revealed in the present work. The color photographs, neutral and documentary in style, are deliberately interchangeable, an attitude encouraged by the layout of the book. It opens with some thirty photographs of different types of places, interspersed with excerpts from administrative texts dealing with urban development and punctuated by bare, off-white spaces which invite the viewer to make connections with one or another of the photographs contained in the second half of the book, presented in the form of a catalogue.
